Jim Greenhill
Born in London, England, Jim Greenhill was educated at Dulwich College before coming to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar.
At The News-Press, a Gannett newspaper in Fort Myers, Fla., Jim gained broad reporting experience before settling in on the crime beat. He won national, state and in-house awards and spent four months on loan to USA Today. Jim quit The News-Press in 1998 to work full-time on his non-fiction book. Someone Has to Die Tonight is an account of the self-styled teen militia the Lords of Chaos, whose ringleader is on Florida's Death Row, convicted in the shotgun slaying of his high school band director. Jim's work on the book was the subject of a two-hour Dateline NBC special ("When a Killer Calls") that first aired in March 2002.
Greenhill joined the Durango Herald as a Staff Writer in 2002, where he won more awards. He wrote the text for Fire in the Sky, a book documenting the Missionary Ridge Fire of 2002. The book was named best nonfiction essay book by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association.
In 2003, Jim took a six month leave from the newspaper and successfully completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training with the U.S. Army to become a soldier in the Army National Guard. The U.S. Army granted him an "exception to policy" for his age when he enlisted in reaction to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. In 2005, Sgt. Greenhill took an extended military leave from the newspaper in order to serve as a Soldier full time. He divides his time between Arlington, Va., and Durango, Colo., which he and wife Carol call home.
